Castillo de la Mola - Novelda

Castillo de la Mola - Novelda

15 April 2014

Castillo de la Mola is located on a small hill beside the Sanctuary of Santa Maria Magdalena, about 4 kilometres from the town of Novelda.

The castle is of Islamic origin, and was built in the late twelfth century on an ancient fortification Roman. Its structure is polygonal. It consists primarily of an exempt square tower of the Almohad period surrounding a wall about 4 feet high inside leaving a large courtyard. Both the tower and the wall were built on mud, a characteristic of Islamic military architecture. It was not until the twentieth century that proceeded to restore the castle. The highlight of the fort is its triangular tower, at the back of the courtyard and long after the construction of the castle, as it dates from the first half of the fourteenth century.

This tower is one of the first examples of a civil-military style building in the Valencia region. It is known by the name of Torre de los Tres Picos, and is unique in its kind in Europe.

Today the castle is in perfect condition to be admired for what it is, a construction with great historical and cultural interest level for the inhabitants of Novelda and the province of Alicante in general. In 1931 Castillo de la Mola was declared a Historic Artistic Monument of National Interest.
